Letterpress workshop with Lawrence Finn

Last Friday I went along to a letterpress workshop run by Lawrence Finn.

Lawrence is a printer and artist based in Sydney. The National Gallery ofAustralia, the State Gallery of NSW as well as a few private collectors are lucky enough to have some of his beautiful work. I was lucky enough to have his company, as well as his Asbern’s, time for a day.

We focused mostly on printing with photopolymer plates, as that was what I needed help with but we also did a bit of wood type printing on my Adana. Lawrence was kind enough to have a good look at my Adana, and give me some cost saving printing tips. He also threw in a few bits of lead, some tympan paper and a stack of supplier contacts.

Lawrence is such an interesting person that it was hard to stop talking to him about all sorts of things, especially over the delish lunch that his wife kindly put together.

I came away feeling extremely happy and thrilled to have my first letterpress print run under my arm. When I got home I took Lawrence’s advice and I framed the first print, so that in future I can look back at it and see how far I have come. :)

Open for Biz!

We opened our on-line store earlier this week.

It’s a very humble little shop with only a few cards available at the moment, but from little things big things grow. These cards are not yet letterpress printed but we have decided to get out there with what we have and how we have it. With a few more dollars all our cards will be letterpress printed eventually, so do come back often as we hope to have our letterpress stock on sale in early 2012.

In the meantime you should know that we are offering
FREE SHIPPING FOR ALL AUSTRALIAN ORDERS! WOO HOO

We hope you enjoy visiting our store and we hope that our cards inspire you to write to someone you love :)

Blueberry letterpress card

I love blueberries but I couldn't find a nice letterpress blueberry card...
So I got to work and here is a sneak preview. These haven't been letterpress printed yet,
but I wanted to share them with you.

Feeling Blue, a two colour letterpress greeting card for a friend when they are feeling blue,
for granny on her birthday, or perfect on a foodie gift such as hampers, tea cakes,
or cupcakes, especially if they contain blueberries!

I've got the blues

I brought the biggest, sweetest and freshest blueberries at The SydneyProduce Markets in Flemington yesterday. Grown by Mountain Blue Orchids, in the Northern NSW, a family owned and operated farm since 1975. The farm hand picks all their blueberries employing local farm hands to ensure consistency in quality. They also cultivate blueberry varieties for nurseries and local gardeners and grow up to a million blueberry plants a year. Mountain Blue Orchids also claims to be a leader in blueberry breeding programs and is actively involved in the development of the many blueberry varieties grown all over the world today.

I love blueberries. Sur Bourke Espresso Bar, in East Sydney has the best blueberry and ricotta muffins (which I indulged in yesterday), Donna Hay also has a delicious blueberry cake that I have eaten but have yet to make! But I couldn’t find anyone making a blueberry letterpress greeting card! I'll have to correct this atrocity - STAY TUNED! :)

White Xmas

Pict by Elum

Elum, the clever cookies have added to their custom designs a wood veneer letterpress xmas card with matching wood veneer envelope. I think the white ink looks really nice and festive on the wood, although I don't think you'll get much of a deep impression on this stock ;)

Meanwhile... Moontree Letterpress continues to inspire me with their wonderful work.
These are the most original xmas cards I've seen so far. In packs of ten A6 cards (6.25 x 4.5"), they are printed in 2-color inks, and come with matching blank envelopes.Wonderfully Illustrated by Cassidy Iwersen, makes me wish for a white Xmas, if you have ever been to NYC you'll understand why. :)
