Tools down

With market stall appearances complete for another year,
and Christmas just round the corner, it is time for us to tidy up,
pack away our tools, and practise handlettering :)

Post Finders Keepers Sydney 2013

The last thing I thought about when I applied to participate at TheFinder Keepers Markets in Sydney, was the amazing people I could meet. I am so proud to say Alischa from Bespoke Letterpress, came to my stall, purchased a couple of cards and spoke to me about her experience. I wouldn’t have had the courage to approach her so I was thrilled and felt very honoured to have met her.  My only regret is that I didn't ask to have my picture taken with her.

The other person was Des Lane, the man I have been waiting for (well kind of). Des use to work as a printer back in the days when letterpress was the only way things were done. He is a member of the Penrith Printing Museum and has kindly offered to take me under his wing, and mentor me when I find my C&P! It’s just the most exciting thing ever!

This year FK yet again had a massive turnout on both days. It’s really great to see such a massive amount of support for local, independent design.
Our cards were very well received, especially considering our competition, and many people also made positive and encouraging comments.
We made some new friends, Kirsty from This Grand Life and Alexandra from Marguerite Designs, both of which were lovely neighbours to have had.

A huge thank you to my family who helped in so many ways in the weeks prior to market day! Without this support it would just have been impossible to have attended FK.
But the biggest thank you of all goes to everyone who came to say hi and purchased one of our products. THANK YOU!
You made the FK experience a great one, in more ways than we could have hoped.

We will see you all again at another indie market soon :)

Typism and other font matters

I received my copy of Typism by D.Falla yesterday.
Verdict: Buy it. The insides are inspiring.

Speaking of type, I attended another hand-lettering workshop run by The Australian Type Foundry with Gemma O'Brien and Wayne Thompson a few weeks ago. It was an all day workshop and one of the best things I have done this year! I had to travel to Newcastle, but Sydney dates have just been announced. I can't recommend it enough. Below are a few snaps from the day.

And speaking of Gemma O'Brien, she has an exhibition on at the moment: YOU MAKE ME SICK - The Spew Bag Challenge! Its awesome. If you haven't heard of it check it out here. The exhibition is on at 118 Oxford St Darlinghurst until 3rd Dec.

Finders Keepers Markets Sydney

Have you heard?
We are going to be attending Sydney's largest Indie market, The Finders Keepers Markets on the 6th & 7th of December.

When it comes to fashion, art, and design there is no competition! The Finders Keepers Markets is the number one Sydney market place where you can discover some of the amazing emerging designers that our city is home to. Expect to find a wonderful treasure trove of handmade products, loads of vintage inspiration, as well as an emporium of creativity and craftsmanship, in the midst of a festival atmosphere.

Its the perfect place to find Christmas gifts, and a fantastic opportunity to support local, independent designers, producing an incredible calibre of work. All products on offer are unmatched by the products found in the vast number of chain stores importing mass produced goods.

We are extremely excited and proud to be a part of FK this year! :)

Hand lettering Workshop

What does a 'tittle', an 'ear', and a 'bowl' have in common?
They are terms that describe the anatomy of  letters. There are about 25 different terms which are good to know if you intend to hand letter, as I found out on Saturday at a hand lettering workshop run by Jo Morley at TheRizzeria Pop-up shop.

Below is a snap shot of the work I did on the day. I didn’t have time to finish-up a piece to print on the stencil printer, but am intending to go back and use it when I am ready.

I had a really great time and am looking forward to attending more hand lettering workshops. I missed out on tickets to Gemma O’Briens hand lettering class this Wednesday night, but that’s ok. I ve got enough to keep me statisfied for a while :)

Letterpress Christmas cards for 2013

I started working on our latest range of Christmas cards and gift tags back in mid-July, so I am totally thrilled to be able to finally share our latest additions with you.

This year our festive range of cards are available in packs of six for $20AUD. That's a saving of $13.00AUD. We hope this goes a fair way into helping with the huge expense that this time of year means for all of us, and helps to encourage hand written words between friends and family at this crazy time of year.

As always these designs where printed in our workshop, on our tiny printing press. It's just so totally awesome what this little machine can achieve! You don’t need to have a huge cast iron letterpress, or tones of space. There are ways around the restrictions, as long as you have a love and passion for your work.

Inspiration  for these designs came from my surrounding environment - Each day as my son and I walk to school we pass a bush of what looks like Mistletoe to me, with thorny leaves. This was to become the Christmas Wonderland card. I used the leaves of this bush in the photographs below. (If you know the name of this plant can you please leave me a comment with it's name?)

I also knew that I wanted to do a card featuring our native Christmas Bells  and it was around this time that my sister happened to hand down to me her childhood collection of stamps. Here I found many vintage Australian stamps featuring our native flora and fauna. Such beautiful stamps. I couldnt believe that The Christmas Bells stamp from 1967 was part of her collection! :)

Six pack Christmas cards $20.00AUD from The Little Paper House Press.

Australian Christmas Bells six pack of cards $20.00AUD.

Australian Christmas Bells gift tag. Avaliable individually or in packs of six.

Christmas Wonderland six pack of cards $20.00AUD.

Australian Christmas Bush card $5.50AUD or six pack for $20.00AUD

What's new?

On the drawing board:
I found time to doodle! So rare. I took inspiration from our Marc Martin and his first picture book, A forest, published by Penguin Viking. I was working on our signature pattern.
More of this to come soon.

In the workshop:
Brighter Days Are On The Way, two colour letterpress greeting card.
These had to be hung to dry, due to an ant invasion.
Not the best way to dry prints, but what can you do.

In the shop:
We are having a mini sale!
That's 50% off! Now that's what I call a sale!

In our garden:
After watching The Flight Of The Butterflies a few months ago, my kids and I planted some seeds in the hope of transforming a part of our garden into a butterfly garden. Our flowers have finally started to bloom. No sign of many butterfly's just yet though.

Out and about:
I went to visit Art & About Sydney, Hyde Park.

Back again soon :)

Friday's inspiration

On my way to deliver an order of cards today, I popped into one of my favourite paper goods store to immerse myself in beautiful note books and journals, greeting cards, garlands, books, and lots of other bits and pieces. I could have come home with a whole bunch of stuff, but thankfully I only came home with this :)

Double Rainbow Card!

We have a NEW card in store!

Double Happiness is the newest card to join our growing range of letterpress cards.
We printed this card in our own little workshop with four colours onto recycled paper,
and we are truly happy with the results.  Every time we put a new design through the press I am totally amazed by what this little press is capable of achieving. I think it would be fair to say that its our best print run to date!

To think that this old little press is the work horse of our business, and capable of producing such beautiful results just tickles me pink :)

You can purchase this card via our on-line store, Blackbird Corner, Inkwell Letterpress Boutique, with other independent retailers to follow :)

Letterpress invitaions

Last week I printed personal invitations for an event, coming up next month.
Its the first personal job I have put through the press and I was really happy with the results.

I printed this one sided invitation, in two colours, orange and charcoal.
Because the size of the art work was larger than the size of my base, I had to run it through the press three times. This wasn't a problem as it was a very small print run, although the set up took while!

For an extra special feel, I used a luxurious 100% cotton paper, in white by Gmund. This budget friendly paper, is now easily available in Australia. Two and a half years ago, when I started letterpress printing, it didn't seem to be an option, at least not through my contacts. Now BJ Ball and Lexel papers distribute throughout Australia.

The lucky ducks at Chapel Press Letterpress last year visited the Gmund paper mill, in Germany for a tour of the facilities.  I'd also love to visit this place one day, as well as the Fabriano Paper Mill in Italy, but that's another story.

To finish it off I used a short wave cutter on my guillotine to trim it down to size, which gave it a fancy boarder :)
